Ballast Water Management Plan

Ballast Water Management Plan (BWMP) for superyachts. Compliant with the BWM Convention and IMO Guidelines G4 and G8. Professional package with BWMP template, crew training guide, operational procedures, and Ballast Water Record Book template.

What's Included

  • Ballast Water Management Plan Template (Word format)
  • Operational Procedures
  • Crew Training Guide
  • Ballast Water Record Book (Word format)
  • IMO Resolution MEPC.127(53) — BWM Convention Guidelines (Official PDF)

The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention) entered into force in 2017 and applies to all vessels in international traffic that carry ballast water. For superyachts that carry ballast—including sail-assisted motor yachts, sailing yachts with ballast keel tanks, and power yachts with trim ballast systems—the BWM Convention requires a type-approved Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) or compliance through ballast water exchange, plus a ship-specific Ballast Water Management Plan (BWMP). Superyachts trading internationally between regions are subject to port state control inspection of their BWMP and ballast water records. A missing or inadequate plan is a recordable deficiency under all major PSC MOU regimes. This professional package gives you a complete, flag state-ready BWMP and the supporting operational tools.

Who Needs This

This package is for superyachts that carry ballast water and operate internationally under the BWM Convention. Whether your vessel uses a type-approved BWTS to meet the D-2 biological treatment standard, or relies on ballast water exchange (D-1 standard) under flag state transitional arrangements, you are required to have an approved BWMP. Superyachts regularly calling at US ports are subject to US Coast Guard ballast water management enforcement, which includes inspection of the BWMP and ballast water record book. Pacific-trading vessels face inspection pressure from Australia and New Zealand, which apply the BWM Convention rigorously. This package is also appropriate for new builds requiring a BWMP as part of their pre-delivery documentation.

What’s Included

Ballast Water Management Plan Template

A fully structured Word document meeting the requirements of IMO Guideline G4 (MEPC.127(53)): vessel particulars and ballast system description, safety procedures for ballast operations, operational procedures for ballast water exchange (D-1) and BWTS operation (D-2 where fitted), procedures for sediment management and disposal, record-keeping requirements, the designated ballast water management officer, and reporting procedures for suspected treatment failures. The template includes sections for both D-1 and D-2 standard compliance, so it can be adapted as your vessel’s treatment arrangements change.

Crew Training Guide

A structured training guide for officers and crew involved in ballast water operations—explaining the BWM Convention requirements, the reasons for ballast water management, how to operate the vessel’s ballast water exchange or treatment systems correctly, and how to complete ballast water record book entries accurately. Designed for use at safety meetings and officer inductions.

Operational Procedures

Stand-alone operational procedure cards for ballast water exchange operations and (where applicable) BWTS operation, suitable for laminating and storing at the ballast control station. Covers pre-operation checks, operational sequence, monitoring during operation, and post-operation recording.

Ballast Water Record Book Template

An Excel-format record book meeting the BWM Convention Regulation B-2 recording requirements. Pre-formatted for all entry types: ballast water uptake, ballast water exchange operations, BWTS discharge, sediment disposal, and exceptional discharge entries with master’s reasons.

Regulatory Compliance

This BWMP satisfies BWM Convention requirements and the IMO Guidelines for Ballast Water Management Plans (G4) and Ballast Water Sampling (G8). It is designed to meet the requirements of the Red Ensign Group, Marshall Islands, Malta, and Bahamas flag states. The record book format meets US Coast Guard 33 CFR Part 151 ballast water record-keeping requirements.

How to Use

  1. Download all files immediately after purchase
  2. Complete the vessel particulars and ballast system description sections of the BWMP
  3. Select the appropriate compliance pathway section for your vessel (D-1 exchange or D-2 treatment)
  4. Use the Crew Training Guide at your next safety meeting to brief ballast water officers
  5. Post the Operational Procedures at your ballast water control station
  6. Begin recording all ballast water operations in the Record Book
  7. Submit the completed BWMP to your flag state for endorsement
  8. Retain ballast water records on board for a minimum of two years

Why Choose Our Template

This BWMP was developed with direct reference to BWM Convention enforcement practice and the flag state approval process for ballast water management plans. The template’s dual D-1/D-2 structure means it remains valid through changes to your vessel’s compliance pathway—whether you are currently operating under exchange procedures or have a BWTS installed. The crew training guide translates the biological and environmental rationale for ballast water management into terms that deck officers and ratings can understand and take seriously. When BWM Convention guidelines are updated or flag state implementation changes, the package is revised and existing customers receive the update at no additional cost.
