Mooring Lines Management Plan

Mooring Lines Management Plan (MLMP) for superyachts. Compliant with ISM Code Section 7 and OCIMF MEG4 Guidelines. Standard package with MLMP template, companion guide, and quick reference card covering mooring safety, line inspection, snap-back zones, and record-keeping.

What's Included

  • Mooring Lines Management Plan Template (Word format)
  • Companion Guide with completion instructions
  • Quick Reference Card (laminate-ready)
  • IMO Resolution MSC.474(102) — Mooring Equipment & Fittings (Official PDF)

Mooring line accidents are among the most serious and frequently fatal injuries in maritime operations. The snap-back zones of synthetic mooring lines under tension are among the most hazardous areas on any vessel, and the consequences of a line parting or bollard failure during berthing or in heavy weather are severe. ISM Code Section 7 requires companies to identify the hazards, assess risks, and establish procedures for all potentially dangerous operations—and mooring operations are explicitly in scope. The OCIMF Mooring Equipment Guidelines (MEG4) have become the industry benchmark for mooring line management across all vessel types, and flag state surveyors and class societies increasingly reference MEG4 when assessing mooring procedures and line inspection records on superyachts. This package provides a structured Mooring Lines Management Plan and the tools to implement it.

Who Needs This

This package is appropriate for any superyacht with synthetic mooring lines—which is to say, virtually every vessel. Superyachts operating in the Mediterranean, where stern-to or bow-to Mediterranean mooring is the standard berthing method, face particularly complex and hazardous mooring operations in confined marinas, often with guest pressure and time constraints. Vessels that have experienced a mooring line failure, a near miss during berthing, or that have received an SMS deficiency related to mooring procedures should treat this plan as a priority. The package is also suitable for new vessels establishing their SMS documentation from scratch.

What’s Included

Mooring Lines Management Plan Template

A fully structured Word document covering all aspects of mooring line management: mooring line inventory by type, material, and SWL; inspection and testing procedures including visual inspection and retirement criteria; snap-back zone identification and deck markings; personnel placement during mooring operations; communications and command procedures during berthing and unberthing; procedures for mooring in adverse weather; winch and windlass operational procedures; tail and pendant management; port and marina liaison procedures; and record-keeping requirements for line inspection and retirement. Reflects MEG4 guidance adapted for superyacht operational contexts.

Companion Guide

A practical completion guide explaining each section of the MLMP—how to assess and document your mooring line inventory, how to define snap-back zones for your deck layout, how to establish inspection intervals and retirement criteria for your line types and operating conditions, and how to brief crew on mooring safety during the pre-operation toolbox talk.

Quick Reference Card

A laminate-ready card for the bridge and foredeck station covering: snap-back zone boundaries for mooring operations, the pre-mooring briefing checklist, line condition assessment criteria, and the command and communication protocol during berthing.

Regulatory Compliance

This Mooring Lines Management Plan satisfies ISM Code Section 7 hazard identification and risk management requirements for mooring operations. It reflects the OCIMF Mooring Equipment Guidelines (MEG4) best practice standards. It is designed to meet the requirements of the Red Ensign Group, Marshall Islands, Malta, and Bahamas flag states, and meets the mooring safety expectations of flag state SMS auditors and class society surveyors.

How to Use

  1. Download all files immediately after purchase

  4. Establish your inspection interval and retirement criteria using the MEG4 guidance in the companion guide
  5. Brief your deck officers and crew using the Quick Reference Card
  6. Implement the pre-mooring toolbox talk procedure for all berthing and unberthing operations
  7. Begin recording line inspections in the maintenance and inspection section of the plan

Why Choose Our Template

This MLMP was developed with direct reference to MEG4 guidelines and ISM Code SMS audit practice on superyachts. The companion guide explains snap-back zone assessment for the specific deck layouts common on large yachts—stern-to mooring configurations, aft swim platform mooring, and Mediterranean berthing with multiple lines running aft. The pre-mooring briefing checklist reflects the operational reality of berthing superyachts in busy marinas with crew of varying experience. When MEG4 or ISM Code guidance changes, the package is updated and existing customers receive the revision at no additional cost.
